Experiences in sports clubs play a significant role in fostering young people’s integration and self-esteem– ”Let’s be better: Welcoming all in sports”
At the WELLcome project’s finalconference, ”Let’s be better: Welcoming all in sports,” the importance of sports, physical activity, and club participation for the integration of children and youth with immigrant backgrounds was discussed. The international, multilingual, and multicultural event was held in early December at Hanaholmen – Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre in Espoo. The message was to create a safe and welcoming culture in sports clubs where all participants feel included.
The seminar ”Let’s be better: Welcoming all in sports” was organized in collaboration between Humak and Finlands Svenska Idrott (FSI) as part of the WELLcome project. The seminar, aimed at reaching a diverse audience, was conducted in English, and the presentations were sign language interpreted into spoken English.
Like the WELLcome project, Humak also strives to promote equality and educate actors who understand diversity. Diversity and interculturality, values that emphasize understanding different people, activities for children and youth, as well as the role of associations and volunteer work, are integral to Humak’s values and education.
Dakota Robin shared a touching story about his life in a sports club. His life changed when he could no longer find a place in the club. After overcoming challenges, his emotions and his mother’s words guided him toward a better path. The final conference was in collaboration and held at Hanaholmen – Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre. Children and youth need a safe environment for activities
The seminar featured international and national experts, sports leaders, club representatives, researchers, and athletes. Particularly touching were the stories shared by young participants. They illustrated the importance of club activities. For instance, coaches significantly influence young people’s sports experiences and their overall growth. Being excluded from club activities can lead to mental health issues, social isolation, and even criminal behavior.
Participation in sports club activities can be a challenge for people with immigrant backgrounds or minority status for various reasons.
The seminar emphasized the importance of being accepted for who you are. This requires greater understanding and awareness. The threats posed by prejudices and inadequate training were highlighted. Experts also brought up global and economic perspectives.
Through children and youth, immigrant parents can also integrate more effectively into society, its language, and culture. A parent of a child who fled the war in Ukraine shared that it was in the sports club where they first saw their child smile.
